Newly employed attorneys begin trial work shortly after assuming office. Usually, entry-level trial work commences in the misdemeanor division with supervised case preparation and presentation of criminal traffic and misdemeanor cases. The Division Chief will assist new attorneys with understanding their duties and responsibilities and the continuing education process with the objective of providing Assistant State Attorneys with the resources and training needed to become effective prosecutors.
The office is organized into misdemeanor, juvenile, and felony trial divisions in Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto Counties. Specialized units include sex crimes, violent crimes, homicide, white collar/exploitation of the elderly and animal abuse.
Continuing legal education is mandatory for Florida lawyers. Internal and external training opportunities are available and a seminar video library is maintained to ensure Assistant State Attorney compliance with the continuing legal education requirements of The Florida Bar.
We accept and welcome applications and resumes for Assistant State Attorneys on a continuing basis. Please download the Employment Application, Background Supplement and Criminal History Record Check forms.
